Lessons From Lisbon

I am just back from the European Chapter meeting of the International Academy of Family Lawyers in beautiful Lisbon, Portugal. Held at the Ritz Four Seasons, this year’s meeting continued the legacy of fantastic IAFL events. It is such a privilege to be a Fellow of this distinguished organization.

At the Lisbon meeting old friendships were renewed and new friendships were formed. Of course there was a full slate of enlightening educational programmes. Topics covered included The Hague Convention, gender issues, family finance claims, children in same sex families, maintenance methodologies, children’s residence arrangements, regulating succession, and arbitration. Of course there was also much informal discussion regarding the UK leaving the EU (i.e., Brexit). Considering that the roster included speakers from The Netherlands, Scotland, France, England, Missouri, Michigan, California, Florida, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Wales, Portugal, Switzerland, and Poland, the meeting was truly a global event.

Thanks go out to IAFL President Nancy Berg, European Chapter President Daniela Kreidler-Pleus, and local host Joao Perry de Camara. Kudos also to the charming people of Portugal!

Felicidades,

John Harding
